Finn Balor’s WWE Championship loss to CM Punk at Elimination Chamber may have revealed more about his future than the result itself. While Balor came up short in the title match, the bigger story was what didn’t happen — Judgment Day never showed up, and Balor never asked for their help.
For years, Judgment Day has played a major role in Balor’s success, often interfering to secure victories. This time, however, Balor stood on his own. That decision appears to be intentional, and according to Dave Meltzer, it could be the first step toward a babyface turn.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer explained that WWE has been slowly building toward this shift through Balor’s recent promos and in-ring behavior.
“Well, he did do the handshake and there was no JD and Dom and he never called for them. So that's the story. The story is, is that he's going to be, I think that they're finally going to get to him and Dom. You know, I mean, him and Dom were scheduled for SummerSlam. I mean, that's when the match was first scheduled to happen. And I think that they just dragged it out because Judgment Day was doing so well. They didn't want to rush it.”
Balor’s actions didn’t stop there. Leading into the match, he made it clear he wanted to prove himself without relying on Judgment Day, which represented a clear change in tone compared to his past character. Meltzer noted that this was a key part of WWE’s long-term storytelling direction.
“But lately, you know, Finn's been certainly building towards being a baby face. He did those baby face promos leading into this match. You know, ‘I have to win it on my own’ and all that, which I thought was just gonna be one of those things where they come and interfere later in the match.”
Instead of interference, Balor lost clean and showed respect afterward, even shaking Punk’s hand. That moment reinforced the idea that Balor is moving away from Judgment Day’s tactics and toward a more honorable approach.
Meltzer also speculated that WWE may have plans for Balor to eventually feud with Dominik Mysterio, which could become one of the company’s most personal rivalries once the split fully happens. The lack of Judgment Day involvement at Elimination Chamber may have been the first clear sign that WWE is beginning that transition.
If WWE continues down this path, Balor could soon emerge as one of the company’s top babyfaces, with his separation from Judgment Day serving as a major turning point in his character.
Do you think WWE should turn Finn Balor babyface and have him feud with Judgment Day, or would you rather see him remain part of the faction? Share your thoughts and let us know what you think WWE should do next.
