WWE is not slowing down in its pursuit of Mexico’s wrestling market, with reports indicating that the company is eyeing a major event in the country following its acquisition of a 51% stake in AAA.

According to Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE is set to launch a significant event in Mexico, potentially headlined by Cody Rhodes. The company is reportedly planning to make a major splash in the Mexican market, and sources have confirmed that the announcement could come sooner than expected.

“WWE is very aggressive about dominating Mexico, particularly with the AEW and CMLL alliance and WWE’s purchasing of AAA, meaning they are doing to be heavily into competition there.”

While Meltzer mentioned that WWE is cautious about the logistics of doing a pay-per-view in Mexico due to the high costs involved, there is still a possibility for a major event or a series of events to take place.

“The only thing we were told is that right now there is a plan for a major show that would be headlined by Rhodes. WWE can’t make the money for a PPV and the costs of doing TV there don’t make sense since the Mexican government nor cities in Mexico aren’t going to pay money to bring WWE in.”

However, despite the cost concerns, WWE’s strategy seems clear: to dominate the Mexican market. Meltzer notes that WWE might even be willing to lose money on a premium live event (PLE) to solidify their presence. The idea is to gain a foothold in a territory traditionally controlled by AEW and CMLL, particularly as WWE pushes to expand its influence in not just wrestling but other media and merchandise as well.

“But they still may do something, or perhaps a series of things, because they are not hot in competition.”

Ernesto Ocampo from Super Luchas weighed in on why WWE has never held a pay-per-view event in Mexico City, citing the immense costs involved with bringing production and the necessary set designs. Despite this, with WWE’s acquisition of AAA, Ocampo believes the situation could change.

“With AAA, they might also lose money, but what they’re looking for is to take over the market. And not just in wrestling; they want to bring in other types of television productions, more sponsors, TV shows, cartoons, action figures.”

This could mean a potential WWE vs. AAA event, possibly at a significantly lower price to make the event more accessible, but ultimately aimed at taking over the market and asserting dominance in the region.

With WWE’s strategic push into Mexico and the potential for a high-profile event, the company is clearly positioning itself to challenge AEW and CMLL’s grip on Mexican wrestling.
