Just when fans thought Adam Copeland might be free to reclaim the name “Edge,” WWE has slammed the door shut—at least for now.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office confirmed that WWE’s original filing to maintain the “Edge” trademark was abandoned on April 22, 2025, after the company failed to respond to a previous inquiry in time. The lapse came from a missed deadline—three months after a January 6 document asked WWE to clarify or provide missing information in relation to its November 2024 application.

That window of opportunity, however, didn’t last long. On May 1, WWE filed to revive the trademark application, signaling that it has no plans to let the “Edge” name fall into anyone else’s hands—even if the man behind the character is now working full-time in AEW. According to the USPTO, WWE’s new filing “has been accepted by the Office” and is now being reviewed by an examiner.

“If the application was abandoned for failure to file a timely statement of use or a request for extension of time to file a statement of use, the application will be forwarded to the intent to use unit,” the USPTO stated. The new filing confirms that WWE is actively seeking to maintain ownership of the Edge name.

Adam Copeland, who left WWE in 2023 and now performs in AEW as “Cope,” has yet to publicly comment on the trademark drama. While the AEW star hasn’t used the “Edge” moniker since making the jump, many fans speculated he could try to reclaim it after news of the abandoned filing surfaced earlier this week.

With WWE moving fast to correct its mistake, any attempt by Copeland or AEW to scoop up the name now faces an uphill legal battle.
