WWE fans pay close attention to every detail on television, so when Damian Priest failed to kick out of a pinning attempt by Seth Rollins at Money in the Bank, they noticed immediately. More information has since emerged about what happened.

The clip of Priest not kicking out went viral, but this was not part of the planned show. The referee, recognizing the mistake, stopped counting the pinfall attempt because it wasn’t time to end the match yet—Drew McIntyre hadn’t cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that sources confirmed Priest was supposed to kick out. This was discussed after the show, with Triple H addressing it during the post-show.

Priest was said to be fine afterward. If the referee had counted to three, the title would have switched to Seth Rollins. This would have altered the planned McIntyre cash-in, making it a one-on-one match without No DQ rules, rendering Punk’s attack illegal. Rollins’ stipulation of not challenging for the title would have been invalid, and WWE would have faced a situation where Priest was no longer in Judgment Day, according to the match rules.

In all, one WWE backstage source said “it was an unfortunate situation, but those don’t usually happen with Damian Priest, and he was probably more bothered about it than anyone. Considering how much he gives of himself, it would be silly for anyone to hold that against him. It’s just a ‘shit happens’ situation.”

It’s possible WWE might address this on television. They have been incorporating real-life situations, such as contract issues, into their storylines. A real-life incident like this could add an interesting twist, especially since losing the match would have meant Priest leaving Judgment Day.

With SummerSlam on the horizon, WWE continues to build excitement. The road to the biggest event of the summer is heating up.
