Marcus Mathers might be one of the breakout names to watch in WWE’s new ID program, but long before signing his first contract, his identity in the ring had a surprising origin—and it involves Eminem.
In a recent interview with Casual Conversations, Mathers revealed how his trainer helped him come up with a name when he was first starting out. The process was simple: name a few things he liked. The result ended up sticking—and sounding a lot like one of the biggest names in rap history.
“I didn’t have a name. I asked my trainer, and he’s like, ‘Give me a couple things you like.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know… I like Eminem, Pokémon, wrestling.’ Then he came up with Marcus Mathers. I was like, ‘All right, that works for now.’ And it just stuck.”
The connection to Marshall Mathers wasn’t lost on the interviewer, who immediately picked up on the Eminem parallel. Marcus laughed off the comparison but admitted it’s something people catch often. He also brought up how similar his story is to a major WWE Superstar.
“It’s crazy too because I just watched like AJ Styles’ documentary about debuting at the Rumble, and he had the same story—someone just gave him the name, and he kept it. Now it’s still AJ Styles.”
Now part of WWE’s inaugural ID class, Mathers is soaking in the moment while never forgetting how far he’s come. From CZW shows and deathmatch memories to signing with WWE, the journey has been anything but ordinary. Still, his name—rooted in a love for rap, wrestling, and Pokémon—continues to represent everything that got him here.
