Talk of Chris Jericho’s possible WWE return in 2026 just hit a strange fork in the road. On one hand, WWE creative hasn’t mentioned his name at all. On the other, the company’s official YouTube channel is feeding the rumor mill with throwback Jericho matches.

Speculation exploded after Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that AEW sources believe Jericho won’t re-sign when his deal ends in late 2025, setting him up for a surprise return at the 2026 Royal Rumble. “There are those in AEW who believe that he’s not going to be back and will start in WWE as a Royal Rumble surprise,” wrote Dave Meltzer.

But Fightful Select quickly threw cold water on the idea, saying even AEW talent likely wouldn’t know Jericho’s real plans because “Jericho’s creative is usually discussed directly with Tony Khan and most people wouldn’t be in the know.” They added that WWE isn’t biting either. “We have to reiterate—Chris Jericho has not been discussed within creative of WWE, and many in the company have no clue if his contract is frozen or is ticking.”

And yet—despite the silence from WWE’s creative side—the WWE Vault YouTube channel just dropped two full-length Jericho matches: one against Roman Reigns from August 22, 2016, and another against John Cena from August 22, 2005. Fans quickly took it as a subtle tease or an intentional nod to his possible return.
