WWE is always planning for its next wave of talent, and right now two of NXT’s biggest names—Trick Williams and Oba Femi—are drawing attention as possible main roster call-ups.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer broke down why both men have upside, but also why WWE may need to be cautious before pulling the trigger. When it came to Trick Williams, Meltzer admitted that his charisma and promo ability are undeniable. But he also noted the risk of rushing him into a top spot before his in-ring work is fully refined.
“Well, character wise, he was actually more over before, but I thought that he needed. I, I wouldn’t have rushed him because for Trick, I would have brought him in and wanted to make him a top guy because his promos and charisma are that good. But you don’t want him flawed as a top guy and then put him in like a top guy match and then he’s average. So I thought that the extra year would do him well to, to shore up the one. The weakness that he has.”
Meltzer then turned to Oba Femi, who has dominated NXT as a monster presence, but may find the main roster landscape a tougher challenge.
“Oba Femi. The problem with Oba Femi is, is that in NXT you can be this monster and on the main roster it’s like there’s a lot of big guys and it’s harder — not to say that he can’t make it. But it’s not as easy. It’s not — it won’t be as easy for him because there’s, there’s in NXT, pretty much they let everyone just put him over as a monster. And on the main roster there’s some of those guys that have enough tenure and things like that or, or like, you know, or Randy Orton type of guys where all of a sudden he ain’t going to look like such a monster next to them to where, you know, and are they going to sell for him like he’s a monster? And it’s like, you know, maybe they will. But, but the dynamic changes.”
So while both Trick Williams and Oba Femi are viewed as prime candidates for a call-up, Meltzer’s analysis shows WWE is carefully considering how and when to make the move. For Trick, it’s about ensuring his in-ring game matches his charisma. For Oba, it’s about whether his “monster” aura can survive against established veterans and other giants on the roster.
WWE is clearly preparing the ground for its next generation of stars. The question is whether these two will be fast-tracked, or given more time to develop before stepping onto WWE’s biggest stages.
