WWE and AAA’s current relationship has seen quite a few AAA talent work with WWE for various crossover shows already. As their relationship continues, it appears WWE has changed their approach to signing new talent for AAA.

Speaking to Superluchas, AAA figure Ernesto Campo revealed that WWE has changed its approach to signing talent. Instead of going after wrestlers from CMLL, they now want to focus on signing independent wrestlers.

They might still bring in former CMLL stars at some point, but it’s not a big goal anymore. This change will help create better competition and give more chances to indie wrestlers. Older veterans who are still trying to stay in the spotlight from their fame 20 to 25 years ago will slowly be pushed out. AAA wants to feel fresh and different from what fans usually see in the U.S., with bigger and more exciting matches.

“One thing that has changed is that instead of aggressively recruiting from CMLL, AAA now plans to focus on independent talent. They may sign ex-CMLL wrestlers eventually, but it won’t be a priority. This creates healthier competition and more opportunities for indie talent. Veterans who are trying to live off past glory from 20–25 years ago will gradually be phased out. AAA wants to be dynamic and distinct from what’s seen in the U.S., with more spectacular matches.”

When asked if this meant AAA is no longer scouting CMLL talent but is actively watching indie wrestlers, he confirmed it. Campo said they are keeping an eye on many indie performers in small venues across Mexico, including those who’ve never been on TV but bring strong ideas.

Campo added that WWE is now interested in more than just in-ring ability, they’re also looking for personality and creativity, like what Misteriuana has shown. That means indie wrestlers should be prepared because a WWE opportunity could come when they least expect it.

“Yes. They’re watching many indie wrestlers across small venues throughout Mexico—many who’ve never had TV exposure but have great ideas. What WWE is looking for now, besides in-ring talent, is character potential and creativity—like Misteriuana has shown. So indie wrestlers should be ready—you could get a WWE callout of nowhere.”

This comes after we have reported that AAA is set to open a WWE-aligned Performance Center in Mexico next year, which will serve a similar purpose to NXT when it comes to training new talent. Therefore, we’ll have to wait and see what talent WWE will end up signing for AAA in the coming months.
