WWE Backlash 2025 didn’t go as originally planned, and now we know why.

According to Fightful Select, WWE made significant changes to the match order the day of the event, altering the lineup that was originally shared by Cory Hays. The reported card from Friday included Becky Lynch vs. Lyra Valkyria as the second-to-last match and Dominik Mysterio vs. Penta set to open the show.

However, the backstage report confirms that the final match order was switched around just hours before the event, with “Most of the match order changed the weekend of the show. John Cena vs. Randy Orton was always set to close,” according to the report.

This adjustment explains why the Becky Lynch vs. Lyra Valkyria Women’s Intercontinental Title match was moved from its originally reported spot to earlier in the night. Similarly, Dominik Mysterio vs. Penta, initially slated to open the event, was also shifted in the lineup.

With the lineup being reshuffled, the event still delivered plenty of shocking moments, but the last-minute changes left some fans questioning WWE’s decision-making process and what prompted the sudden switch.
