Sami Zayn may have captured the United States Championship on the road to WrestleMania 42, but the reaction online quickly turned into something WWE couldn’t ignore — and now it appears the company is fully aware of the criticism.

Zayn defeated Carmelo Hayes in a chaotic match on the March 27 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, walking out with the United States Championship after interference involving Trick Williams. The moment was presented as a major victory heading into WrestleMania 42, positioning Zayn as a key player during one of the biggest stretches of the year. However, the reaction from fans didn’t match the tone of the celebration.

After WWE uploaded the match finish to its official YouTube channel, viewers responded in large numbers — and many weren’t supportive of the outcome. At the time of our original writing, the video pulled in 7.8K likes compared to 12.2K dislikes, meaning roughly 61.1% of viewers hit the dislike button. That level of pushback stood out, especially with WrestleMania 42 approaching, when fan momentum usually plays a major role in shaping champions and storylines.

During discussion about the situation on WrestleVotes Radio, it was explained that the backlash surrounding Zayn’s championship win has already reached people inside the company. The online criticism reportedly became significant enough to draw attention internally as WWE monitored fan responses across social media and other platforms.

“WWE is aware of the online criticism surrounding Sami Zayn's title win.”

That confirms the company isn’t ignoring the negative response and is actively paying attention to how fans feel about the storyline. While there’s no clear indication that WWE plans to change direction immediately, awareness of the backlash could play a role in how the United States Championship story develops heading into WrestleMania 42.

Fan reactions have influenced booking decisions in the past, and with the biggest show of the year getting closer, this level of pushback could become harder to overlook if the reaction continues. WWE made the call to put the championship on Sami Zayn, but now the company finds itself dealing with the fallout from a fan base that isn’t fully sold on the decision — at least not yet.
