It looks like WWE is eyeing another breakout star from Japan—and they’re not being subtle about it.

According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that WWE is “really” going after NJPW’s Gabe Kidd, whose contract is reportedly coming to an end this month. With AEW also in the picture, this could turn into one of the biggest free agent battles of 2026.

During a segment discussing underappreciated talent and major shifts going into the new year, Meltzer explained that Kidd isn’t just another name in the rumor mill—he’s actively being discussed at the highest levels in WWE. While acknowledging Kidd’s sometimes volatile nature, Meltzer made it clear that his edge is exactly what’s drawing serious attention.

“WWE really wants Gabe Kidd. His name is getting brought up a lot right now. He’s on their radar big time,” Meltzer said. “I mean, he’s got a hell of a look, he’s got presence, and he’s a very good promo. Obviously there’s the stuff that comes with him—that he’s a wildcard—but that also makes him stand out, you know? He’s not generic. He’s not a clone. And that matters.”

Gabe Kidd has had a wild run the past year with NJPW and RevPro, including some of the rawest promos in wrestling and a brutal, hard-hitting style as part of Bullet Club War Dogs. His “unfiltered” mic work and refusal to play safe have turned heads. John Pollock and Garrett Gonzales both noted Kidd’s unpredictability could scare some promotions off—but WWE seems ready to roll the dice.

Meltzer added that Kidd’s deal could be ending very soon—possibly by the end of January—and with AEW and NJPW still in the picture, “WWE really wants him.” That signals a full-court press from the biggest name in wrestling to land one of Japan’s most controversial rising stars. The free agency period just got a lot more interesting.
