In a tragic incident that has shaken the Japanese wrestling community, former pro wrestling referee Katsumi Sasazaki is believed to have been killed by a bear while working at a hot spring facility in Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture. He was 60 years old.

Sasazaki, who had worked for All Japan Women’s Wrestling, Zero1, and most recently Marigold, was cleaning an outdoor bath at the hot spring inn on Thursday when he reportedly went missing. Police later found signs of a struggle, including bloodstains, animal fur, his cleaning equipment, glasses, and slippers left at the scene.

A search party eventually discovered a body believed to be Sasazaki’s in a nearby wooded area. Authorities confirmed they shot and killed an adult male Asiatic black bear that is believed to be responsible for the attack.

Known to fans as “Katsumi Tiger,” Sasazaki was remembered by those close to him as a kind and dedicated figure in the industry. He was more than just a referee—he also worked as a bus driver, transporting wrestlers to and from events.

Hideo Arai, president of a Yokohama-based entertainment company, reflected on his legacy.

“As a renowned referee, he was a pillar of many ring events. He had a gentle personality and approached matches with a sincere attitude. I knew he had retired and was working at a hot spring, but how could this happen?”

Rossy Ogawa, founder of Marigold and a longtime figure in Japanese wrestling, posted a heartfelt message about Sasazaki’s passing, recalling how he had quietly officiated his final matches with grace and humility.

“Sasazaki’s final refereeing role was in the Marigold ring. He was a junior from All-Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling, quiet but dedicated to his work, and had two young daughters… Such an end is unimaginable; it can only be described as deeply regrettable and heartbreaking. May he rest in peace.”

Sasazaki’s tragic death has not only devastated those who knew him but also raised new concerns about wildlife dangers in rural Japan.
