WWE’s WrestleMania 42 lineup is taking shape, and at this point the card is nearly locked in. With multiple title bouts, celebrity involvement, injuries changing plans, and a few matches added late, the full picture is finally starting to come together.
Here’s what we know so far about the WrestleMania 42 card, how it got to this point, and what could still change before showtime.
Right now, WWE has announced 12 matches, with the current plan sitting at 14 total matches split across two nights — seven matches each night. That includes two matches that were added late in the process as the company finalized the lineup behind the scenes. Several of the biggest matches were locked in early, forming the backbone of the WrestleMania 42 card.
Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk for the World Championship is one of the headline attractions and is widely viewed as one of the matches most likely to steal the show. Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Championship is another centerpiece bout, with Orton’s storyline including a mystery mentor figure teased for weeks leading into the event.
Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi is also locked in, and expectations are that this one will be short, explosive, and potentially one of the hottest matches across both nights. Meanwhile, Jade Cargill vs. Rhea Ripley for the WWE Women’s Championship and Stephanie Vaquer vs. Liv Morgan for the Women’s World Championship round out the major women’s title matches.
AJ Lee vs. Becky Lynch for the Intercontinental Championship adds another major storyline to the mix, giving the show a strong blend of legacy names and newer stars. As the weeks passed, more matches were added — some with clear story buildup, others arriving with little warning.
Drew McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu was officially confirmed as an unsanctioned match after it had been expected for weeks. Finn Balor vs. Dominik Mysterio also became official, continuing their long-running tension. Sami Zayn vs. Trick Williams was upgraded into a United States Championship match after Zayn captured the title on SmackDown following an open challenge scenario.
There is also strong belief that Carmelo Hayes could still be added to the U.S. title situation, keeping that rivalry active heading into WrestleMania weekend.
One of the biggest additions that surprised many fans was the Intercontinental Championship ladder match. That bout will feature Penta defending against Je’Von Evans, Rusev, Dragon Lee, and JD McDonagh. The challengers were announced as winners of qualifying matches, though those qualifying bouts didn’t air until days after the announcement — making the match feel like it arrived suddenly without traditional buildup. Despite that, ladder matches have a reputation for delivering memorable moments, and expectations are high that this one will follow that pattern.
Another late storyline shift created a match between Seth Rollins and Gunther. The feud stemmed from an angle where Rollins attacked Paul Heyman, only for Gunther to choke him out — setting up a confrontation that had reportedly been planned for weeks. Earlier plans reportedly included Bron Breakker, but after injury concerns and timing issues, WWE opted to delay that feud instead of rushing it.
There’s still speculation that Breakker could interfere in the Rollins vs. Gunther match to extend future storytelling possibilities.
The women’s tag team division is also getting major attention with a multi-team championship match. Lash Legend and Nia Jax are set to defend their titles against Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss, Bayley and Lyra Valkyria, and The Bella Twins. Earlier plans briefly involved Asuka and Kairi Sane in this storyline, but that changed when a singles match between Asuka and Iyo Sky was penciled in as one of the final additions to the card.
That Iyo Sky vs. Asuka match is widely seen as one of the most technically promising bouts of the weekend.
WrestleMania 42 will also feature a six-man tag match blending wrestling and social media crossover appeal. The Vision faction — including Logan Paul, Austin Theory, and IShowSpeed — is scheduled to face The Usos and LA Knight. That match carries a comedy element due to Speed’s involvement but also plays into WWE’s ongoing strategy of mixing mainstream personalities with traditional wrestling talent.
Outside the matches themselves, WWE also made a major announcement involving John Cena. Cena was revealed as the official host of WrestleMania 42 — a decision made more than a month before it was publicly announced. The move came as WWE looked to boost ticket sales, which have been trending behind last year’s numbers at the same point in the sales cycle.
Many insiders believe Gunther vs. Rollins could become a standout match, while Reigns vs. Punk and Rhodes vs. Orton are seen as potential classics. Meanwhile, matches like McIntyre vs. Fatu and the Intercontinental ladder match are expected to deliver high-impact action that keeps fans engaged across both nights.
At this stage, the WrestleMania 42 lineup appears mostly finalized — but as history has shown, last-minute surprises are always possible.
With the card nearly set and multiple storylines still unfolding, the final weeks before WrestleMania could still bring unexpected twists, surprise appearances, or even additional match changes before the show begins.
