Will Ospreay is still feeling the effects of a career-changing injury from 2018, and he admits he hasn’t been the same since.
During his appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Ospreay opened up about the moment that altered everything—a Spanish Fly gone wrong at NJPW Sakura Genesis 2018.
“Yeah, he (Chris Jericho) called me up. I’d done something stupid. I fcked my neck up back in 2018 (at NJPW Sakura Genesis). I’ve never been the same since then, and it was against Marty (Scurll),”* Ospreay revealed. “We’d done a Spanish Fly and my fcking head hit the apron. But my neck contorted underneath me and I just—I felt everything. Like the shot go down my arm. It was horrendous, and I’ve never been the same since.”*
The brutal landing sent a shock through his body, and while Ospreay kept wrestling, the damage was already done. Not long after, Jericho personally reached out to check on him, concerned about how serious the injury might be.
As Ospreay continues his career, the upcoming NJPW Sakura Genesis 2025 event in April will see a new challenger crowned for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship through the New Japan Cup tournament, which kicked off on March 7.
With Ospreay openly admitting that the 2018 injury changed him forever, it raises the question—how much longer can he keep pushing his body at this level? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
