When fans saw Stone Cold Steve Austin and CM Punk face-to-face promoting a WWE video game, speculation exploded about a possible dream match. It was teased. The attitude was there. But according to Austin himself, it just didn’t come together — and he now explains why.
The WWE Hall of Famer sat down with Chris Van Vliet for a long-form interview where the subject came up. While Austin didn’t shoot down the idea, he confirmed it wasn’t close to becoming reality due to real-life timing and recovery issues.
“It was teased. And that one time I think we did, we were promoting a video game and I think I just had an ACL, PCL just put in my left knee for shoot. And maybe it was teased. But it just never happened.”
Austin was straightforward about the reality of these situations. Sometimes, dream matches simply don’t materialize.
“It was like me and Hogan. Never. There’s a bunch of things never happened. So, you know, there’s a bunch of good shit that did happen. So not everything can happen.”
Despite all the what-ifs and hype, this is one match that will likely never be scratched off the fantasy list. Stone Cold’s comments put to rest the rumors that a match was ever close. It was pitched in fantasy — and maybe teased in a promo — but nothing real ever developed. Want to see this one happen even now?
What do you think — did WWE miss a golden opportunity with Austin vs. CM Punk? Would you still want to see it somehow? Drop your thoughts in the comments and let us know.
