At AEW’s Forbidden Door event, Stephanie Vaquer delivered a solid performance that caught WWE’s attention, eventually leading to her signing with the company. While she is part of NXT, it appears that Vaquer was offered to join the main roster, and she has now explained why she chose not to go to the main roster in the first place.
While speaking on Busted Open After Dark, Stephanie Vaquer explained that WWE had always been her dream, and while she had many options, she felt it was the right place for her.
During her early talks with WWE, she had the opportunity to start on the main roster, and that’s what she wanted at first. However, after thinking it through, she decided that joining NXT was the best choice. She wanted to improve her English, adapt to televised wrestling, and learn WWE’s in-ring style at a steady pace instead of rushing into the main roster.
“My dream. WWE is my dream… I tried to think like adult, that option. But WWE is my dream and say, okay, this is for me. Many options and talks but, say no. WWE is for me and I take NXT because I really like (to) do things or new things but good. I don’t like the fast and no good. So, I say okay, I need to learn English, I need to learn TV show, I need to learn American style, WWE style. So I say, first I say main roster. That changed and say, ‘I want to go to NXT for learn…’ Yeah (WWE asked me if I wanted to start on the main roster)… Main roster (was my first answer). The first call, they call me and say, ‘NXT or main roster?’ I say, ‘Main roster…’ Yeah, I think and say, ‘Okay. Take it easy. I need to learn English… Okay, change. NXT.’”
Vaquer also shared a story about getting a call from Shawn Michaels. When she answered in Spanish, she was surprised to hear him introduce himself. Since her English wasn’t great, Michaels spoke slowly so she could understand. She didn’t catch everything, but she appreciated how patient and kind he was while explaining why he wanted her in NXT.
“It’s weird because I checked the phone and I never think who called. Just say, ‘Hola’ in Spanish and I said, ‘Hola!’ He said, ‘Hello. Shawn Michaels. Hello,’ and now I understand more English and I cannot speak no good. Sorry… When Shawn Michaels called me… I tried to speak in English. But, he say, ‘Okay, I know you understand but you not speak good English. So, I speak slow’ and understand… maybe not 100 percent. But 90 percent and he’s so sweet and speak slow and try to explain to me about…”
Stephanie Vaquer is preparing for a big title vs. title match at the Roadblock special on March 11th. She will defend her NXT Women’s North American Championship against Giulia, who is putting her NXT Women’s Championship on the line as well.
