Shawn Michaels is opening up about why one of the most talked-about matches of his later career didn’t make the cut in his new documentary, and his explanation makes it clear the focus was never meant to be about revisiting old ring moments.

During a conversation with Big Gold Belt Media, Michaels was asked directly about the absence of his controversial 2018 Crown Jewel return match from The Heartbreak Kid: Becoming Shawn Michaels. The interviewer pointed out that the match wasn’t included and asked whether there had been any talks about featuring it.

Michaels responded by saying he wasn’t aware of any discussions about including the bout and explained that the documentary was designed to shift attention away from his in-ring legacy and toward the personal side of his journey, especially the relationships he rebuilt after difficult years in the business.

“No. Again, not that I'm aware of. No. Because I do think a lot of this was really less about the wrestling career — that it was again the personal life, you know.”

He went on to explain that the story being told was more about redemption and reconciliation rather than reliving specific matches. Michaels reflected on the importance of being able to return to the industry after personal struggles and repair damaged relationships along the way.

“And look, it is, I mean, and my salvation and being able to again come back and, you know, be able to — I don't know — this line of work that is so tough and again with, you know, these big burly guys, but to be able to, you know, come back, ask, you know, to tell these guys you're sorry and to ask for forgiveness and then gracious enough to give that to you and to be able to rebuild and reconcile those relationships.”

Michaels continued by explaining that getting a second chance in wrestling — and turning that opportunity into something meaningful — was a major part of the documentary’s message. Instead of retelling matches fans already know about, he said the project leaned into how his career evolved after personal change.

“And then, you know, to parlay that into a second chance and then be able to give back again to a line of work that's been so good to you. So it, you know, as mushy as it might sound, it's more about that than it was the actual wrestling career because I — we do feel like that has been covered. You know, the guy — you know, the guy that was the showstopper and the performer — that's been well documented.”

Michaels’ comments make it clear that the documentary wasn’t trying to ignore parts of his career, but instead aimed to tell a different story — one centered on growth, forgiveness, and how he found a new purpose helping shape the next generation of WWE talent through NXT.

With fans still debating his return match at Crown Jewel years later, the decision to leave it out will likely spark discussion among longtime viewers who remember the buildup and fallout from that night.

Do you think Shawn Michaels’ 2018 Crown Jewel return should have been included in the documentary, or was focusing on his personal journey the right call? Let us know your thoughts and drop your feedback in the comments.
