Brian James may have stepped away from his behind-the-scenes WWE role, but it turns out he doesn’t have to sit on the sidelines before popping up at wrestling events.
Fans recently noticed that the WWE Hall of Famer is now scheduled to appear at WrestleCon in Las Vegas during WrestleMania 42 weekend instead of WWE’s official WWE World fan convention. The move raised some eyebrows because many wrestlers leaving WWE are typically subject to a 90-day non-compete clause before they can take outside bookings.
However, a new explanation from Sean Ross Sapp during the March 14, 2026 Fightful Select Q&A shed light on why Road Dogg’s situation is different. Sapp explained that Road Dogg was working for WWE as an employee on the creative team rather than under a standard talent contract, meaning his agreement didn’t come with the same restrictions many wrestlers face.
“Yes, he was an employee. Employee deals can have some cooling off periods associated with them. They can have informal non-compete, basically paid time. Road Dogg didn’t have that. He was immediately taking bookings and appearances. It all depends on the particular details of your departure, what you agree to, what kind of deal you have.”
Sapp also noted that longtime employees who leave WWE sometimes receive severance deals that can keep them financially connected to the company for a period of time after their departure.
“There might be a severance there. There have been some people who have worked on an employee end of things and they had a very healthy severance. Like, you know, they've been there for decades and decades. So they were still getting paid by WWE for a couple years and they went on to AEW and there was at least one person that was getting basically an AEW check and a WWE check as a result of that.”
In Road Dogg’s case, Sapp made it clear that the WWE Hall of Famer is free to take bookings right away if he chooses.
“But Road Dogg is free to go if he — I mean if he wants to wrestle or anything he can. I don't expect that to happen, but yeah, he can go do appearances, he can do signings, he can do anything that he wants.”
That freedom is exactly what appears to be happening now. Instead of appearing at WWE World, Road Dogg is scheduled to reunite with longtime tag team partner Billy Gunn for fan appearances during WrestleMania 42 weekend at WrestleCon in Las Vegas.
