AEW has been giving more focus to its women’s division over the past year and that’s why many fans have been clamoring for AEW to introduce Women’s Tag Team Titles. While the idea seems exciting for many, Deonna Purrazzo has now explained why she isn’t fully behind AEW introducing Women’s Tag Team Titles.

While speaking on the Lightweights podcast, Deonna Purrazzo was asked whether AEW should introduce Women’s Tag Team Titles. She said she’s not sure and changes her mind often. She admitted she doesn’t really love women’s tag team wrestling because it’s not something she fully understands, and she thinks a lot of women wrestlers aren’t trained to have great tag team matches.

Purrazzo said tag team wrestling works best when there’s real chemistry between the partners. That only happens when two people have a real relationship and time to build a connection. She used her team with Chelsea Green as an example. They are best friends in real life since they travel together, train together, and spend holidays together. Fans saw photos and videos that showed their bond, which helped people believe in their team.

“I go back and forth on this all the time. I don’t love women’s tag team wrestling — it’s just not something I have a great grasp on. And I think that’s the case for a lot of women. I don’t necessarily think we’re trained to have incredible women’s tag team wrestling matches.

However, on the flip side of that, if we got more experience with a particular tag team partner — this is where I say no — because I think you really need chemistry with a partner. I think it’s really important to develop a relationship with somebody and tell the audience why you’re in a tag team.

You know what I mean? Like, when Chelsea and I became a tag team, it was like: we’re best friends in real life. We travel together. We train together. We have family dinners. We celebrate holidays together. Like, here is picture evidence of all that. Video evidence of our relationship.”

Purrazzo said that often in women’s wrestling, tag teams are just thrown together. Two random women get put in a match with no story or reason for teaming up, and that makes it hard for fans to care. She feels women don’t get enough time to tell stories or build those relationships, which is why she sometimes thinks AEW shouldn’t add a women’s tag title.

“But if you’re just thrown into a tag team — like, ‘me and you are now going to be a tag team’ — that’s what happens with a lot of women’s wrestling. They just pick four random people, throw them in a tag match, and there’s no substance to it. There’s no rhyme or reason. There’s no reason you and I should work together. And I feel like women don’t get the time to tell those stories and develop those relationships. So that’s why I say no.”

However, Purrazzo also sees the other side. A women’s tag team division could give more women in AEW chances to shine, especially those not going for the main championship. She mentioned past teams like Willow Nightingale and Kris Statlander, or Skye Blue and Julia Hart, where fans could understand why they were teaming up.

In the end, Deonna Purrazzo said AEW should only introduce a women’s tag team championship if they’re going to give women the time to build strong and meaningful tag teams.

“But on the flip side, I think it could create so many opportunities for women. A completely new division. And particularly in AEW, there are so many women right now.

If you paired them up — like we saw, not anymore, but Willow Nightingale and Kris Statlander were together for a long time. We understood why they liked each other. We saw Skye Blue and Julia Hart become a tag team. We understood why they were together.

If we could do that with the girls who aren’t in the world title picture and really build a women’s tag team division, I think it would create amazing opportunities for us. But I’d only say yes if we’re getting the opportunity to create meaningful tag teams.”

Tony Khan has already made it clear that he is interested in introducing Women’s Tag Team Titles in AEW somewhere down the line. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether the company will see Women’s Tag Team Titles being introduced in the future, as it could definitely shake things up in the women’s division.
