AEW fans have been waiting for the official debut of the Women’s World Tag Team Championships — and now Tony Khan has finally revealed the real reason for the delay.
In a new interview with Iridian Fierro, the AEW President confirmed that the women’s tag belts are already made and ready to go. But despite having the physical titles in hand, Khan said that the company has held off on launching them due to a wave of injuries that have rocked the women’s division.
“I have a bunch of people I would like to get involved in a women’s tag team tournament, potentially,” Khan said. “There has been so many injuries in the women’s division. As the person who put together the women’s casino gauntlet, I wish that we had come out of it healthier. A quarter of the people in the match got knocked out of the match and out of action indefinitely. So we had one match where I lost 25 percent of the roster in one match. So that was pretty hard.”
Khan specifically mentioned that Mina Shirakawa, who appeared in the Casino Gauntlet match at All In: Texas, is one of the injured talents who remains sidelined.
With the roster struggling to stay healthy, Khan made it clear he doesn’t want to add another championship if the division can’t sustain it.
“I would like to do AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship. To have that, I really think we do need to have a healthy division that can maintain these championships, because we haven’t been able to sustain that.”
That hasn’t stopped fans from asking when the belts will debut — and now we know it’s no longer a matter of speculation. Khan confirmed the belts already exist and are simply waiting for the right time to be put into play.
“I have the belts,” he said. “I made the belts. They exist. But I will put them into play when we are able to put the very best, full roster forward.”
With AEW’s injury bug continuing to impact major shows and storylines, it looks like the women’s tag division will remain on pause until the roster is healthy enough to support it.
