If you’ve been wondering why AEW hasn’t announced a second video game despite their expanding roster, you’re not alone—and now we have some insight into why that sequel hasn’t materialized.
During a recent Fightful Select Q&A, Sean Ross Sapp was asked whether AEW had plans for another console release following Fight Forever. While AEW does own the engine that powered the game, Sapp revealed there’s no current follow-up in development—and there are a few key reasons for that.
“They have always held the engine rights. They own the engine of the game, but I have not heard of [another game in development],” Sapp said, before pointing to the massive financial commitment AEW already made.
“I know it was a gigantic investment for Tony Khan, and even with the gigantic investment, I know there were some budget issues for the creators.”
While Fight Forever generated attention early, it also suffered from a long, drawn-out hype cycle that didn’t help the game upon release. That’s a mistake Sapp believes AEW is looking to avoid next time around.
“They made the mistake of announcing that game super, super early. So I think that any game like that will probably be worked on more secretly and then information will drop closer to release.”
Sapp even pitched alternative ideas internally, suggesting that AEW would be better off going in a more niche direction next time.
“I have pitched within AEW like, why don't you all just reskin Fire Pro Wrestling? Or why don’t you have the people that make that [Fire Pro] do that game? That is right up AEW’s alley—like, why not do that?”
He compared the concept to something AJ Styles once pitched for TNA over a decade ago—indicating that a lower-budget, more creative wrestling sim might make more sense for AEW moving forward.
At the moment, there’s no official follow-up to Fight Forever in the works—at least not publicly. But if AEW is planning something, fans can expect a lot less talk and a more low-key rollout next time.
