Brock Lesnar came back for the first time since 2023 as he demolished John Cena at the end of the SummerSlam Premium Live Event. Following SummerSlam, it’s now been revealed when WWE actually cleared Lesnar for his return.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that WWE’s legal team approved Brock Lesnar’s return four weeks ago. The reason for this decision isn’t fully known. However, it likely has to do with the Janel Grant lawsuit.
Meltzer said it’s possible WWE believes the case will go to arbitration and Lesnar won’t be involved, or they may be nearing a settlement that would also remove Lesnar as a factor. There’s also a chance someone within the company simply changed their mind.
Meltzer also explained that WWE decided not to hold post-show press conferences because of Lesnar’s surprise appearance and the sensitivity surrounding it.
“Four weeks ago, WWE Legal cleared him. As far as why, I don’t know. And that something to speculate on, because there’s a lot of stuff.
Obviously, everything relates to the Janel Grant lawsuit, and WWE Legal is either confident that their thing goes to arbitration and Lesnar’s not a factor at that point. Or they’re close to a settlement, and at that point Lesnar’s not a factor. Or somebody there just had a change of mind. And I don’t know which one of those it is.
I do know, everyone figured this out, but I can tell you also factually, that the reason they didn’t do the press conferences was because of this angle.”
We reported that WWE went to extreme lengths to keep Brock Lesnar’s return a secret. They flew him into New Jersey the night before SummerSlam late at night and kept him fully hidden throughout the entire day of the event.
Lots of people were really upset about Brock Lesnar’s return since the Beast Incarnate was named in Janel Grant’s lawsuit against Vince McMahon. The lawsuit claimed she was used as leverage during contract negotiations with Lesnar, which led to Lesnar being taken off television entirely.
Nevertheless, it’s clear WWE wanted to bring back Brock Lesnar as soon as possible and SummerSlam seemed like the right time to make that happen. Therefore, we’ll have to see how WWE will book Lesnar and John Cena’s feud, as it’s clear there are a lot of mixed reactions about this whole situation already.
