Randy Orton’s mystery phone storyline has sparked nonstop speculation, but two of the biggest rumored names — Vince McMahon and The Rock — now appear unlikely to be involved.
The storyline began on the March 16 episode of WWE Raw, when Orton was first shown speaking on the phone with an unknown person. Since then, WWE has continued teasing that the caller helped push Orton back into a more ruthless mindset following his heel turn on Cody Rhodes.
Early speculation took a wild turn when Vince McMahon’s name was floated as a possible choice. That talk picked up after comments from Tommy Dreamer fueled theories that McMahon could somehow be tied to the angle. However, that idea was later shot down, and reports revealed that WWE originally had a completely different person planned for the role — but that deal ultimately fell through.
Bryan Alvarez previously noted that the original choice was someone unexpected, but the agreement didn’t come together, forcing WWE to change direction before the reveal. Now, attention has shifted to another major name — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — but that rumor may also be off the table.
Dave Meltzer addressed the speculation in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, noting that while The Rock would be the biggest possible name tied to the storyline, people within WWE have denied that he’s involved.
“As noted, while Dwayne Johnson fits the bill and would be the biggest addition for a show that is behind on ticket sales, those in the company have denied the name to us.”
Meltzer also stated that WWE still has a name lined up for the reveal and that at least some people within the company are already aware of who it is.
“But my impression is they have a name that at least those in the inner circle are aware of. They could still be working them but they are not of that impression.”
With Vince McMahon speculation already dismissed and The Rock reportedly ruled out internally, the mystery surrounding Orton’s phone calls has become even harder to predict. WWE is expected to reveal the identity of the mystery caller on the April 3 episode of SmackDown, leaving fans waiting to see what direction the company ultimately chose after its original plan fell apart.
