Royce Keys has been the subject of plenty of discussion in recent weeks, and a new update sheds light on what actually happened with him just before the March 6 episode of WWE SmackDown.
While fans continue waiting for his official television debut, Keys competed in a dark match prior to SmackDown going live from the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon. According to a Ringside News reader who attended the event, Keys had the WWE Main Event graphics displayed during his entrance. However, the match ultimately took place as a dark match and was not part of the Main Event taping.
The appearance still gave Keys another opportunity to work inside WWE’s production environment while the company continues preparing for his eventual on-screen role.
Speculation around Keys’ status had intensified online following comments from WrestleVotes that some interpreted as suggesting WWE didn’t have plans in place for him. The original remark, however, indicated only that there wasn’t a confirmed update regarding his creative direction at the time.
“Nothing. Absolutely nothing. We had speculated for months that SmackDown was the place for him. It certainly does seem like that’s going to be his home. He was backstage Friday night… Don’t know when he’s showing up on TV. Hopefully they have an idea. Hopefully this is part of the plan.”
Shortly after that conversation gained traction online, another report indicated that WWE had already filmed material involving Keys, though details about what exactly was recorded were not disclosed.
Additional context later came from PWInsider, which reported that Keys is currently going through WWE’s standard acclimation process behind the scenes. According to sources familiar with the situation, this stage is routine for new signings as they learn how WWE’s production system and backstage workflow operate before appearing on television.
The report also noted that the delay shouldn’t be interpreted as a lack of creative plans for Keys, since the majority of new WWE talents go through the same adjustment period.
Even while remaining off SmackDown programming, WWE has continued to keep Keys visible by promoting his appearance on Stephanie McMahon’s “What’s Your Story?” series, helping maintain interest in his eventual debut. Now with a dark match appearance before SmackDown, it appears Keys is continuing to get reps inside the WWE system while the company prepares for the right moment to introduce him on television.
