Wade Barrett hasn’t stepped into a WWE ring in nearly a decade — but there’s apparently one opponent who could make him seriously consider it.
While speaking to Metro UK, Barrett was asked about the possibility of wrestling again. The longtime commentator made it clear he’s not actively trying to return to the ring, but admitted that facing Drew McIntyre might be the one scenario that would be hard for him to refuse.
Barrett acknowledged that the idea of stepping into the ring with McIntyre would be tempting because of their history and friendship. At the same time, he noted that the match would probably destroy him physically, describing McIntyre as a dangerous competitor once the bell rings.
“That would be a difficult one to turn down, I’m not gonna lie. I think physically, it would destroy me for good, because Drew’s a bit of a beast in that ring.”
Barrett also admitted that while he once prided himself on matching the intensity of his opponents, he isn’t sure he could still keep up with someone like McIntyre today. Even so, Barrett suggested that if such a match ever did happen, it would likely serve as the final chapter of his wrestling career.
“Back in my day, I could give as good as I got. I don’t know if I could still give as good as I would get from Drew. If that one did happen, hard to turn down, but that probably would be the end, the big goodbye.”
These days, Barrett works primarily as a commentator for WWE and has stayed away from in-ring training altogether. He explained that he intentionally avoids even light training sessions at the Performance Center because he doesn’t want WWE officials getting any ideas about putting him back into the ring: “Let’s not put that out in the universe. Don’t give anyone any bad ideas!”
Wade Barrett’s last match took place on April 4, 2016, during an episode of RAW, where he partnered with Sheamus but lost to Big E and Kofi Kingston. Nearly ten years later, Barrett seems perfectly happy calling the action instead of competing — unless, of course, Drew McIntyre ever comes calling.
