A clip of Meltzer presents him criticizing the DQ finish to Mike Elgin’s G1 match, calling it the worst match of the tournament. Russo doesn’t understand why this matters. Wrestling is a business but Meltzer doesn’t understand that. If you don’t try to kill yourself and put on a ‘5 star’ match, Meltzer couldn’t care less about your match and he’ll probably criticize it.
Meltzer also compared this NJPW roster to the 1927 Yankees, basically calling it the best wrestling roster of all time. Russo says that might very well be the case but he wouldn’t know because he doesn’t watch it. Russo just doesn’t understand why Meltzer spends so much time covering this niche product, because from a business perspective it doesn’t make any sense. It’s obvious that Meltzer is a mark for this stuff, and that’s why he spends so much time covering it.
A fan also tweeted Meltzer this past week telling Meltzer that his level of expertise can’t reach the level he thinks it’s on until he works backstage for a wrestling company. Russo completely agrees with this fan. Meltzer responded to the fan by saying that he’s had wrestlers contacting him for advice for over three decades. Russo says that’s because the marks have now become the wrestlers, and Russo would love to know what wrestler was calling Meltzer for advice 30 years ago.
