Vince McMahon will never forget the history Hulk Hogan made.
Hulk Hogan faced The Rock at WrestleMania in 2002 in a match promoted as “Icon vs. Icon.” That true “once in a lifetime” encounter brought together two top stars from different eras. The event in Toronto saw fans cheered for Hogan despite his Hollywood Hogan villain role at the time. Now that the two-time WWE Hall of Famer is gone, that match has been replayed many times.
While speaking on The Real Hulk Hogan documentary, Vince McMahon reflected on the match. He remembered that historic match in Hulk Hogan and The Rock’s career as they had a double turn at WrestleMania X8.
“You always want to do what the fans want. These two iconic figures, to see them clash, just the anticipation of it alone was like, ‘Wow, what is going to happen?’ They were cheering for Hogan, but in a way that was different. When they got in the ring and stood face-to-face, they both felt it. It was like, ‘Wow, this is unbelievable, and it’s very different. What are we going to do?’ When you see something like that happening, it’s like, ‘Wow, this is so unique.’ It was a defining moment in both of their careers. It was something extraordinary to watch. You came right out of your seat. It was so magical. He was a pioneer. There was no one like him.”
Hogan died on July 24 following a heart attack. He will be missed by millions of fans, although his name was not without controversy. In fact, some WWE Superstars reportedly had an issue participating in Hogan’s 10-bell salute.
Vince McMahon also came to Hulk Hogan’s defense during that TMZ special. He claimed that The Hulkster was never a racist, regarding the many controversies surrounding his name.
