The Higher Power storyline remains one of WWE’s most talked-about twists, but new comments from former WWE star Mideon suggest the ending fans saw on television wasn’t the original plan.

While speaking on Rewind Recap Relive, Mideon pulled back the curtain on the Ministry of Darkness era and explained that the group’s direction began shifting once they were paired with The Corporation. According to him, the faction had built a strong identity with its dark presentation, but that momentum started to fade when creative changed course.

Mideon recalled how the group went from dramatic entrances and special effects to being repositioned alongside Vince McMahon’s stable, which he felt hurt the overall presentation. He also noted that The Undertaker himself seemed to recognize the shift wouldn’t last long.

“No. No. They had several different people that were going to be it or something, which I didn’t understand and nobody else did. Well, it kind of ruined us when they said they started this game or they said, ‘Oh, we’re going to put you with the corporation.’ All right. So, we’re doing this right awesome entrance and all the cool special effects and everything to now we’re just walking down the ramp with, you know, Hunter and Chyna and Test and blah blah blah and it just kind of killed it. And that’s when Taker was like, ‘Oh yeah, we’re not going to do this long.’”

As the storyline evolved, WWE began planning the mysterious Higher Power reveal — a storyline twist that ultimately exposed Vince McMahon as the mastermind behind The Undertaker. However, Midian revealed that McMahon wasn’t the only name discussed behind the scenes.

He explained that several potential candidates were considered, including Don Callis, who was portraying The Jackal at the time alongside The Truth Commission. Mideon said the idea of Callis being the Higher Power was strongly discussed before McMahon ultimately decided to step into the role himself.

“And then they came up with a higher power thing. There was several names floated around. I think one of the biggest ones at that time was going to be Don Callis cuz he was doing the Jackal thing with the Truth Commission… So they let you know it was going to be him and then, you know, bless his heart he always wants to play so Vince said, ‘No, no, no I’ll do it.’ So it kind of—it wasn’t good but you know what the hell at that point people were watching everything so it didn’t matter.”

The Higher Power reveal aired in June 1999 and quickly became one of the most memorable moments of the Attitude Era. Vince McMahon declaring himself the mastermind shocked audiences at the time, but Mideon’s recollection suggests the outcome fans saw may have come together later than many realized.

What do you think — would the Higher Power storyline have been better if someone other than Vince McMahon had been revealed, or was he the right choice all along? Share your thoughts and leave your feedback below.
