Randy Orton’s mystery phone storyline just took a major turn — and it looks like WWE had very different plans before things changed.

For weeks, speculation has been running wild about who Orton has been speaking to behind the scenes ahead of WrestleMania 42. Names like Vince McMahon were even floated after comments from Tommy Dreamer — but a new update is now shutting that down.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez revealed that not only is Vince McMahon not the person involved — WWE’s original plan for the reveal didn’t even work out. According to Alvarez, there was a completely different name lined up for the storyline, but the deal ultimately fell through before it could happen.

“I will say this: I do know that they had an idea for somebody who was on the phone. It was not Vince McMahon, and the deal for this person fell through. If it had not fallen through, everybody would have been like, ‘What? Who?!’”

That detail changes everything. Instead of a long-term secret being executed as planned, WWE was forced to pivot — and quickly. Alvarez also made it clear that fans are now going to see a different direction play out, with the company already preparing to reveal whoever they’ve pivoted to next.

“So we’ll find out who they ended up coming out with on the show tomorrow, but it was a really bizarre first choice that they had.”

With WrestleMania 42 right around the corner, this storyline suddenly feels even more unpredictable. Whatever WWE had planned initially is no longer happening — and now fans are left waiting to see what the backup plan looks like.

Do you think WWE dropping the original plan will hurt the reveal — or could the change actually make the storyline better? Let us know your thoughts below.
