Velvet Sky just revealed why she was never signed to WWE — and she’s pointing directly at former talent executive John Laurinaitis.
After a fan posted a clip of her 2005 Sunday Night Heat match against Victoria and wondered why WWE never signed her, Velvet took to Twitter and gave a very honest answer. The reason? Her relationship status — and a policy enforced by then-talent executive John Laurinaitis.
“The reason I didn’t get signed, per right from Johnny Ace’s mouth at our meeting at headquarters when I was told prior to the meeting that I was gonna be signed was because I was in a long term relationship with one of the talent who worked there at the time, and I was told by Ace that he ‘didn’t want HIS divas dating within the company.’”
Velvet Sky went on to say that she chose to stand by her partner rather than change her personal life for a shot at a WWE deal.
“I chose loyalty to my long term man at the time and got passed up because I wasn’t single. 🥴 Oh well. I had a helluva career at TNA and wouldn’t have changed it for anything. ✌🏼”
Velvet Sky would go on to build a legacy in TNA Wrestling, becoming one of the most recognizable women in the promotion’s history as part of The Beautiful People alongside Angelina Love. In October 2025, they were inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame—cementing their impact on the business.
Velvet Sky’s story is another look at the behind-the-scenes decisions that shaped wrestling’s past — and not always for the better. While WWE passed, Velvet built a legacy that didn’t need their stamp of approval.
Do you think Velvet Sky was unfairly passed over? Should WWE have given her a chance regardless of her relationship status? Drop your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion.
