The Undertaker has just now admitted that he lied to Shawn Michaels about beating him up if Shawn didn’t drop the WWE Title to Steve Austin at WrestleMania 14.

While speaking on the Six Feet Under podcast, Shawn Michaels shared a story about being asked during a book interview if it was true that at WrestleMania 14, The Undertaker had threatened to beat him up if he didn’t do the right thing in the match. At first, Shawn didn’t think it happened. He said he would’ve remembered something like that and that he only saw Triple H and Steve Austin that day.

But when the story started spreading, people began saying he was lying. That made Shawn question himself, wondering if maybe he forgot. So he went to ask The Undertaker if it was true. Taker told him no and said if something like that had happened, Shawn would definitely remember.

HBK agreed and thought that was the end of it. Later, Shawn heard that The Undertaker might have actually done it, but only after Shawn had already gone to the ring.

“I was doing a book and the guy goes, ‘Hey, is it true that at WrestleMania 14, the Undertaker came up to you while taping his fists and said if this doesn’t go down the right way, he’s gonna beat your ass?’ And I was like, I don’t think so. I feel like I’d remember that. I told him I didn’t really see anybody that day except Hunter and Steve.

Then it got out there, like I was lying or something. So I started second guessing myself and thought, maybe I forgot. I ended up going to Mark and said, ‘Hey, I was doing this interview for a book, and the guy said something about you threatening me. Did that ever happen?’ And he said, ‘No. I feel like if that happened, you’d remember it.’ And I was like, ‘That’s what I thought too.’

Later on, I hear maybe he actually did do it—but after we had already gone out or something.”

The Undertaker finally explained what really happened. He said their friendship had grown a lot since those days, and when Shawn asked him about the story, he didn’t want to ruin their bond. He admitted that he didn’t tell the truth at the time because he cared about their friendship.

Back then, The Undertaker fully planned to step in if Shawn didn’t do what was right in the match. After his own match with Kane, he waited backstage near the entrance, ready just in case something went wrong. He didn’t make a big scene, but a few people backstage like Bruce Prichard noticed him and could tell something was up.

In the end, The Undertaker said that he was ready to take action, but by the time Shawn asked him about it years later, their relationship had changed so much that he didn’t want to hurt it by being honest right away.

“Okay, hear me out. Obviously, you’ve changed a lot, and now we have a great relationship, a great friendship. So when you asked me about it, I felt really bad admitting that, yeah, I was gonna stomp your ass—or at least try—if you didn’t do business. I felt awful. Our relationship had grown so much, and I genuinely cared about it. So I couldn’t bring myself to tell you the truth. I lied to your face.

I had every intention. If the business wasn’t done, something was going to happen. I didn’t know how it would turn out or who’d be involved, but I was dead set on doing something. By the time you asked me, though, everything had changed between us.

I had already worked my match with Kane, and then you and Steve had gone out. I came back to gorilla and honestly worked myself up, buying into the hype—like, ‘he’s a wild card,’ right?

I didn’t do anything, but I was at Gorilla, just in case something needed to happen. It wasn’t some big dramatic thing that everyone saw. It was subtle. I think someone—maybe Bruce or Sonny—noticed and asked what I was doing. They didn’t say anything, but it was just in case.

Yeah, that’s the truth. That was my intention. And when you asked me, I felt terrible. I was just like, man, we’ve come so far.”

In the end, Shawn Michaels did the right thing at WrestleMania 14 by losing the WWE Title to Steve Austin, which helped kick off the Attitude Era. Nonetheless, it’s understandable why The Deadman lied to Shawn Michaels about being ready to beat him up after all this time.
