The Trish Stratus vs. Tiffany Stratton match at WWE Evolution might seem like a dream scenario, but the reality is that WWE only pulled the trigger on the match days before it was made public.

While the company had been exploring the idea of using Trish at Evolution for weeks, nothing was actually locked in until just recently. In fact, the decision to have her challenge Tiffany Stratton for the Women’s Championship was still up in the air as of last weekend. WWE kept the plans fluid until they were ready to commit—and once they did, the wheels moved fast to make the announcement happen.

The whole situation played out live on the July 4 episode of SmackDown. Stratton came out to hype her upcoming SummerSlam clash with Jade Cargill, but shocked the audience when she announced she’d also be defending her title at Evolution. Moments later, Trish Stratus made her return to accept the challenge, setting up a huge title match for July 13 in Atlanta.

The bout adds major star power to WWE’s all-women’s premium live event and marks a huge opportunity for Stratton. Earlier this year, she teamed with Trish at Elimination Chamber before breaking out as a solo force in the women’s division. Now, she’ll stand across the ring from the Hall of Famer with championship gold on the line.
