Triple H’s sledgehammer has become one of the most iconic props in WWE history, but “The Game” just revealed that one of the few times it actually hurt someone, it was a gimmick version meant to be harmless—and the victim was none other than The Undertaker.

While giving a personal tour of WWE’s new state-of-the-art headquarters on the On Display YouTube series, Triple H reflected on some legendary artifacts, including his infamous weapon of destruction. According to him, the sledgehammer wasn’t planned to become part of his persona—it just happened.

“To be honest, I just used whatever hammer was available,” he said, explaining how it started during a segment involving The Rock. “I used it one time ‘cause they needed—like, I ended up smashing a coffin with it that Rock was in—and it just became synonymous with me after that.”

Over the years, WWE made both real and foam versions for different spots, but even the soft props didn’t always go to plan. Triple H then told the story of how a gimmick sledgehammer accidentally split open The Undertaker before a WrestleMania match.

“Ironically, the only time I ever injured anybody with the hammer was with Taker. We were going to—I believe it was WrestleMania—he was going to put me up for the Last Ride and I was going to grab the hammer on the way up. But we were so afraid—like, could I get all the way up there and still use it? So we used a gimmick sledgehammer that had like a foam head, ‘cause it was much lighter.”

Triple H said the plan was to hit Undertaker safely while holding onto the foam part to absorb the blow. But the plan backfired—literally.

“When I went up top and hit him in the head with it, I held on to the foam part to protect him… and this handle went all the way through the foam part and cut him. From like here to here. I hit him, I had no idea. He went down. When I came up, he was bleeding. I was like, ‘Holy [__], what happened?’ You know, he was just covered.”

Despite all the high-impact matches and dangerous stunts throughout their storied careers, it turns out a foam hammer—meant to keep things safe—ended up doing the damage. And of all people to eat that hit, it was The Deadman himself.

Wrestling fans have seen the sledgehammer end matches, wreck rings, and even smash skulls in storyline, but this real-life incident might just be its most shocking moment yet.
