Nick Aldis finally stepped into a WWE ring at SummerSlam, pushed GUNTHER harder than most expected and walked away with Triple H publicly backing him after the match.
GUNTHER defeated the former SmackDown General Manager by submission after locking in a sleeper hold and dragging Aldis back to the mat. Aldis fought his way through a physical battle, nearly forced GUNTHER to tap with a Cloverleaf and had the crowd fully behind him before the Ring General finally shut the door.
After the match, Triple H took to Twitter and shared a backstage photo with Aldis. His message was simple and made it clear that WWE viewed Aldis’ performance as something bigger than a loss.
“When you fight for everything you believe in… you never lose.”
Aldis entered the match in his old ring gear, used Oasis for his entrance and was introduced as “The National Treasure” before competing in a WWE ring for the first time. Mickie James and their son watched from ringside as Aldis went toe-to-toe with one of WWE’s most dangerous wrestlers.
GUNTHER controlled large portions of the match, but Aldis kept fighting back. He escaped a sleeper, applied one of his own and came close to scoring the upset before GUNTHER finally forced him to tap.
The crowd gave Aldis a standing ovation afterward and chanted “You Still Got It” as he made his way back to his family. Triple H’s reaction added even more weight to the moment and made it clear that Aldis’ SummerSlam performance did not go unnoticed backstage.
Aldis lost the match, but he proved he can still deliver on WWE’s biggest stage. Triple H’s message now leaves the door wide open for WWE to use him in the ring again instead of sending him straight back behind the SmackDown desk.
