Cody Rhodes recently stirred debate after saying WWE could use more of the massive bodybuilder physiques that once dominated pro wrestling. Now Trevor Lee has jumped into the conversation — and his response didn’t hold back.
Rhodes made the comments during the March 4 episode of What Do You Wanna Talk About? while speaking with GUNTHER. During the discussion, Rhodes said that while today’s wrestlers are incredible athletes, the industry is missing the exaggerated, larger-than-life physiques that defined wrestling in past eras.
Rhodes even joked that the locker room could benefit from a throwback-style bodybuilder performer — even if that kind of wrestler wasn’t always the easiest person to work with in the ring.
“I know you’d hate this and hate working with them, but I’m looking for us to get some jacked-up bodybuilder dudes again — like real ’90s style. Need them. The ones that all the boys can’t stand. Just someone where you look at them and go, ‘Look at that look,’ and then we all have to figure out how to work with that. I’d say that’s something that’s missing in WWE right now — the old legit bodybuilder type. Like, look at him, he just looks great.”
After Ringside News posted Rhodes’ remarks on social media, Trevor Lee responded directly in the replies with a sarcastic jab that appeared to target the independent wrestling scene.
“Imagine independent wrestlers working out!”
Lee’s remark seemed to imply that many independent wrestlers don’t prioritize conditioning or body presentation the same way stars from previous generations did. That debate has surfaced repeatedly in recent years as fans compare today’s indie-driven talent pipeline with the bodybuilder-heavy look that defined wrestling in the 1980s and 1990s.
Rhodes’ original comments already sparked discussion across social media about how much wrestling’s visual presentation has changed. Lee’s response added fuel to that debate by taking a pointed shot at the independent scene.
