Top Candidates for GUNTHER’s WrestleMania 42 Opponent Revealed

GUNTHER’s WrestleMania 42 future isn’t finalized — but three major names are now firmly in the mix.

Despite recent chaos on WWE Raw, including being booed heavily in Atlanta and escorted out of the building before Brock Lesnar’s open challenge, WWE reportedly has not locked in The Ring General’s opponent for the biggest show of the year.

During a March 2, 2026 Q&A session, WrestleVotes revealed that while nothing is official, three clear candidates have emerged for GUNTHER’s WrestleMania 42 match.

“Plans for GUNTHER at WrestleMania are undetermined. They’re not sure which direction they’re going to go. It could easily be Rey Mysterio, especially with the Dragon Lee situation going on. GUNTHER vs. Oba Femi is also a possibility. WWE did make it a point to throw GUNTHER out of the building before Brock Lesnar had his open challenge. At this point, GUNTHER’s three options are Rey Mysterio, Oba Femi, or Brock Lesnar. It’s up in the air.”

That leaves Rey Mysterio, Oba Femi, and Brock Lesnar as the top three potential opponents. Rey Mysterio’s name is connected directly to the ongoing Dragon Lee situation. Lee’s recent attack on GUNTHER has fueled speculation that a larger Mysterio storyline could be unfolding, especially given their shared history and faction ties.

Oba Femi presents a completely different dynamic. The powerhouse has made it clear he wants to dominate the main roster, and a collision with GUNTHER would instantly position him at the highest level.

Then there’s Brock Lesnar. WWE’s decision to remove GUNTHER from the arena before Lesnar’s open challenge was deliberate. The company could have easily allowed the confrontation to happen — but they didn’t. That creative choice has only intensified speculation about a potential showdown between two of WWE’s most physically imposing stars.

At this stage, nothing is locked in. WWE appears to be weighing its options carefully, keeping multiple directions open as WrestleMania 42 approaches. With Rey Mysterio, Oba Femi, and Brock Lesnar all in play, the question isn’t whether GUNTHER will have a major match — it’s which path WWE ultimately chooses.
