AEW’s weekly viewership is always a huge topic of discussion online, but it seems Tony Khan has now seemingly walked back a viewership report that he previously said was accurate.
While speaking during the post AEW Forbidden Door media scrum, Tony Khan was asked if AEW is hitting the million mark between cable and Max with live and same-day viewers.
Khan admitted he wasn’t sure, saying that while a report suggested they might be, he didn’t have the exact numbers. What he did know is that AEW ranks as one of the top sports shows. He compared AEW’s performance on MAX to NHL streaming, noting that AEW likely has a strong chance of being a major presence in the Sports tab on HBO MAX .
Khan also mentioned that there will be more opportunities to build relationships with HBO Max in the future. However, he stated that he doesn’t have nearly the same amount of detailed data from MAX as he gets from TBS, and if he did, he would be analyzing it thoroughly.
“I don’t know. According to a report I saw, we may be, but I don’t know. All I know is we are one of the top sports shows. I don’t know what the NBA viewership is, I don’t know the NHL viewership. I can compare regular streaming NHL to AEW. I see AEW probably has a good chance at being a very strong league in the Sports tab on HBO Max. There are going to be more opportunities to build relationships with HBO Max. But I honestly can’t say exactly. I don’t have remotely, not even 1%, the amount of data that I get on a TBS show. If they gave it to me, I’d be breaking it down.”
This comes after Tony Khan was asked about Bethel’s report that AEW Dynamite gets 500,000 viewers on MAX and said it matched what he’s been hearing behind the scenes. He said it was exciting news for AEW and that the report fits with the information he’s received.
“I thought that was a really exciting report for AEW and very consistent with everything we’ve been told,” Khan said. “While the numbers are being kept close to the vest, we’re one of the top sports streaming shows and that report was consistent with what I’ve heard.”
It’s certainly interesting that Tony Khan just decided to walk back on the viewership report that he was previously so confident about. Regardless, we’ll have to see whether AEW will eventually see a consistent increase in viewership and possibly reach the 1 million mark again.
