AEW fans hoping for a women’s version of the Continental Classic might not have to wait forever — but Tony Khan says the company needs all hands on deck before pulling the trigger.
Speaking with Q93 in New Orleans, Khan addressed the idea of launching a Women’s Continental Classic to mirror the men’s annual tournament, which began in 2023 and is already one of AEW’s tentpole events. While he didn’t announce anything concrete, Khan made it clear he’s down for it — just not until the roster is fully stacked and healthy.
“We’ve got the Women’s World title and the TBS title. I think the Continental would certainly be something very, very interesting,” Khan said. “We had some injuries happen in the women’s division earlier this year, at the All In pay-per-view in Texas.”
Khan emphasized that a grueling round-robin-style tournament demands a strong and deep roster, something he believes AEW is close to having. But he’s not about to run the tourney if the division isn’t firing on all cylinders.
“I think it would be a great thing if we get the division healthy where we’ve got all of our top fighters ready to go. That could be a really great thing. You know, that’s a very intense tournament with matches every week. It’s hard-hitting. Last year we actually had an injury on the men’s side. One injury when you have a tournament like that can change everything. So I am very open to it, especially if we can get all the top wrestlers healthy to compete.”
The men’s Continental Classic has already produced standout winners in Eddie Kingston and Kazuchika Okada. Okada recently unified the Continental Championship with the AEW International Championship, but both titles are still being tracked separately when it comes to lineage.
This isn’t the first time Khan has addressed expanding the women’s division. He’s also previously stated that women’s tag team titles are a possibility once the division is in a stable place. Despite some injuries throughout the year, Khan remains optimistic about the division’s current status.
“This is the best year ever for the AEW women’s division,” Khan added.
A women’s Continental Classic might not be locked in for this year — but it’s clear Khan sees it as a real possibility down the line. Once the roster is deep enough, fans might just get that long-awaited tournament.
