For a long time, fans believed AEW would launch a new show called “AEW: Shockwave” on FOX. However, that didn’t happen in the end and now Tony Khan has revealed the real reason behind it getting scrapped.

While speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, Tony Khan explained that AEW Shockwave was simply an idea he filed while brainstorming potential show names. He didn’t realize the name had already been used elsewhere.

“AEW Shockwave is just an idea. I filed a lot of different names for shows and things like that. That was a name I didn’t know anyone else had used. I’m probably not going to do it.”

After speaking with Billy Corgan, he learned that NWA had previously run a show called Shockwave. Khan said he probably won’t move forward with the name and told Corgan that if NWA wants to use it again, they should feel free to do so. Corgan appreciated the gesture, and the conversation ended on good terms.

“I had a really nice talk with Billy Corgan. I like Billy, and even before I became a wrestling promoter, I met him and think he’s a great artist. I talked to him on the phone and said, if that’s a show you might want to do again—because NWA had done a Shockwave, which I didn’t know when we filed it—then you can do it, that’s totally fine. He said he appreciated it, so that was nice.”

Tony Khan’s explanation finally ends all the speculation about AEW: Shockwave. Fans once thought it was a canceled FOX project, but it turns out it was only a placeholder name that AEW chose not to use out of respect for NWA, who had used it first. As AEW keeps growing, it’s clear that Khan is committed to keeping good relationships within the wrestling industry, even if it means giving up a cool show name.

Would you have wanted AEW to move forward with a show called Shockwave? What kind of show do you think AEW should launch next? Sound off in the comments.
