Darby Allin has pulled off some insane stunts during his time in AEW, but one idea was so over-the-top that even Tony Khan had to shut it down.

Speaking on the Way of the Blade podcast with Phil Schneider, Khan revealed that during the early pandemic shows in April 2020—when AEW was taping in QT Marshall and Cody Rhodes’ gym in Georgia—Darby pitched a spot where he’d get hit by a car during his storyline with Sammy Guevara.

Khan explained why that wasn’t going to fly: “Darby wanted to get hit by a car in his program with Sammy. I said, ‘That’s not something we can do right now because we really need you. Not only can I afford for you to not get hurt, I can’t even write you off for a week to sell. You need to wrestle on the show every week, so I can’t do that.’”

He added, “We don’t have anybody else and you’re a major part of what we’re doing week to week. I think that would have not made sense when you have a handful of people there and there are very few of the name wrestlers and he wants to get hit by a car.”

In hindsight, it might’ve been the right call. Allin continued to become one of AEW’s most consistent performers, and his daredevil antics found other outlets—without traffic involved.

Right now, Darby’s off AEW TV as he takes on a different challenge: climbing Mount Everest. Because of course he is.
