Tony Khan has been heavily criticized for having way too many championships for both AEW and ROH and now the AEW President has explained the reason for so many titles.
During the AEW Full Gear media call, Tony Khan was asked why AEW and ROH have so many championships. He explained that the number of titles matches the company’s business model, how much content they produce each week, and where their money comes from, mainly their TV deals.
Khan said AEW now has more weekly programming and introduced more women’s championships, but has not added any new men’s singles titles. He pointed to the launch of Collision and the increase in pay-per-view events as reasons why more belts make sense.
Khan noted that having fewer titles might work for other promotions, but AEW’s schedule is still expanding, so their current championship lineup fits what they’re doing. He then talked about the new pay-per-views and past successes, without giving a direct answer on whether the company has too many titles.
Tony Khan’s response shows that AEW’s large number of championships isn’t just about pleasing fans, it’s connected to TV money and how much programming the company produces. Whether people like it or not, AEW’s growth means more shows, more stories, and according to Khan, more titles to go along with them.
