Tony Khan is expanding AEW’s title picture once again—this time by reviving a piece of wrestling history.

In a live announcement on Twitter/X, the AEW President revealed the creation of the AEW National Championship, which will officially be introduced at AEW Full Gear. Khan was joined by veteran announcer Tony Schiavone, who helped explain the historical significance of the new title.

The AEW National Championship pays tribute to the legacy of the National Championship once defended on TBS, which eventually merged with the United States Championship in 1986. This marks the first time in nearly 40 years that a National Champion will be crowned.

The inaugural champion will be determined during a Casino Gauntlet match at Full Gear, and AEW has confirmed the title will not be limited to AEW programming. According to Khan, it will also be defended across Ring of Honor and NJPW STRONG, cementing its place as a cross-promotional title.

While fans are already following the ongoing tournament to crown the first AEW Women’s Tag Team Champions, the announcement of this new men’s singles title adds another layer of intrigue to AEW’s upcoming pay-per-view slate.

Tony Schiavone will appear on tonight’s AEW Dynamite to provide additional details on the title, its lineage, and who might be in contention heading into Full Gear.
