AEW has several former WWE personalities, including Tony Chimel, who was a longtime announcer on SmackDown during the Ruthless Aggression era and into the early 2010s. Interestingly, Chimel has now stated that he believes AEW would allow him to work on John Cena’s retirement tour if the opportunity arose.
While speaking to Donnie DaSilva and Jimmy Korderas on their HUGE POP! podcast, Tony Chimel acknowledged how much his voice and John Cena’s entrance have been connected throughout their careers. He remains open to the idea of returning to WWE for Cena’s farewell tour.
“Well, that’s nice of you to say (my introductions & John Cena’s entrance go together). I mean, I don’t know, like I said, I’m willing to listen to anybody, you know?”
Chimel, who has done some work with AEW, also believes the company would be open-minded about him announcing for Cena’s WWE sendoff. He suggested that AEW’s management is fairly flexible with outside opportunities. In fact, Chimel is not ruling out working for AEW itself.
“You know what? They’re (AEW) pretty free with their guys and I’m sure if — you know, I can talk to my bosses over there… I don’t think anyone would have a problem. I would do it for AEW too if they wanted me to, you know, do something for them.”
John Cena is set to retire in December this year and will never wrestle again, but he will definitely have a run of a lifetime until then. Bringing back Tony Chimel, who was the voice of Cena’s rise to superstardom, would definitely be a solid addition. Therefore, we’ll have to see if it will happen in the end.
