Toni Storm’s wild entrance and brutal performance in the Philly Street Fight on the September 10 episode of AEW Dynamite weren’t just a tribute to ECW — they came with the official stamp of approval from the Sandman himself.
On Busted Open After Dark, Bully Ray revealed a hilarious behind-the-scenes story involving a text exchange he had with the ECW legend earlier in the day, right before Storm’s hardcore brawl with Skye Blue.
According to Bully Ray, it started with a totally unrelated message from the Sandman.
“So earlier today, I get a text from the Sandman, and it’s completely off topic. A fan drew a picture of the Sandman and Nancy Sullivan—woman—who used to manage Sandman back in the day in ECW.”
That sparked Bully’s memory of Sandman’s recent appearance with Toni Storm, where she famously “knighted” him with a kendo stick.
“He texted me, he said something about Nancy, and I brought up his podcast with Toni Storm… The Sandman was on his knees and Toni, you know, put the kendo stick on both of his shoulders.”
And then came the text that fans are now calling one of the best no-filter moments in wrestling storytelling.
“P.S. If Toni Storm doesn’t come out tonight, smoking a cigarette, drinking a beer, smashing it into her forehead, and bleeding like crazy… you are a complete failure of a human being.”
Bully said Sandman popped huge for the message, but the best part came after the show.
“I told the Sandman before we came on tonight on After Dark, I said, ‘I’m gonna tell this story.’ And he told me that the kendo stick that she had was given to her by the Sandman himself.”
That’s right — the same kendo stick Storm used to beat down Skye Blue in the Philly Street Fight was a gift from the Sandman and it was autographed, making her entrance and performance an even deeper tribute to ECW’s legacy in Philadelphia.
Toni Storm walked away with the win, but it’s the blend of chaos, comedy, and callback that turned this match into a moment fans won’t forget.
Should Toni Storm keep channeling her inner ECW every time she defends the title, or was this Philly street fight a one-time throwback? Let us know what you think in the comments.
