Tom Aspinall can’t get Jon Jones to meet him in the UFC Octagon—but he’s got another idea: meet him in a WWE ring.
The interim UFC Heavyweight Champion is calling his shot for a fantasy crossover match, and it’s got wrestling fans and MMA junkies raising eyebrows. During a chat with MMA personality The Schmo, Aspinall floated the idea of tagging with WWE Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes to take on Jon Jones and newly-turned heel John Cena in a blockbuster babyfaces vs. heels matchup.
Cody Rhodes is my guy. Me and Cody, we’ll have a match one day, Aspinall said. But it’s not just fantasy booking—he sees it as a retirement plan. That’s for when I’ve retired, that’s my retirement plan.
When asked how the teams would shape up, Aspinall added, “I think we might team up, me and Cody Rhodes because we’re both babyfaces, aren’t we? Maybe we could fight Jon Jones and whoever the heel is over there. Who’s the main heel—John Cena just turned heel. Cody Rhodes and Tom Aspinall tag team versus Jon Jones and John Cena, babyfaces versus heels. Big matchup.“
Aspinall has made it no secret he’s a big wrestling fan, and with UFC and WWE now operating under the same TKO Group Holdings umbrella, a crossover like this isn’t totally out of reach. For now, Jon Jones continues to recover from injury with no set date for a title unification bout—and Cena is thriving in his most villainous role in years.
Could we really see UFC’s toughest heavyweight and WWE’s top champion unite against two of the most polarizing names in sports entertainment and combat sports? Stranger things have happened.
