The lineup for tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown continues to grow as the road to WrestleMania 42 rolls on.
WWE will broadcast live from the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon on March 6, with the show airing at 8/7c on the USA Network. With WrestleMania 42 set for April 18 and April 19 in Las Vegas, several major developments are expected as the company continues building its biggest event of the year.
In an update to its official preview, WWE.com confirmed that a second championship match has been added to the card. Carmelo Hayes will defend the WWE United States Championship in another open challenge during tonight’s show. While Hayes has made the open challenge a regular part of his title run, his opponent for tonight’s defense has not yet been announced.
“Tonight, Carmelo Hayes will once again host a United States Title Open Challenge. Who will answer the challenge this week? Find out tonight at 8 ET/7 CT on SmackDown on USA.”
The match adds another title defense to an already stacked episode of SmackDown.
Undisputed WWE Champion Drew McIntyre is also scheduled to defend his championship during the show when he faces Cody Rhodes in a major main-event level matchup.
In addition, WWE Women’s Champion Jade Cargill will come face-to-face with her WrestleMania 42 challenger Rhea Ripley. The confrontation is expected to further build toward their upcoming championship clash at WrestleMania in Las Vegas.
With two championship bouts and a major WrestleMania confrontation already announced, tonight’s SmackDown could play a key role in shaping the direction of several storylines heading into the biggest show of the year.
