Although she looks back at this time fondly now because she was able to learn a lot, she started to get the urge to wrestle after a certain period of time. Once Planet Funk broke apart and everyone went their separate ways, Naomi knew that she’d have an opportunity to make her mark in the ring and she was ready to take advantage of that opportunity.
When she began wrestling the Women’s Revolution hadn’t taken place yet, and WWE was a different place for women wrestlers. She was strictly told backstage that she couldn’t wrestle like the men and she needed to adjust her in-ring style. She was told that she needed to do more ‘girl things’ like pulling hair, instead of punching and doing athletic flips.
After a couple of years she began to see the work being done in NXT by Charlotte, Sasha Banks and the other competitors there, and she knew things were changing. Around the same time Paige and A.J. Lee began having more competitive matches on the main roster, and she was very happy with the prospect of being able to work these types of matches herself at one point.
