Swerve Strickland has plenty of confidence in his abilities — and he believes his versatility separates him from everyone else in the wrestling industry.
While appearing on the Battleground Podcast, the AEW star talked about his long-term legacy and explained that his goal is to be remembered as one of the most well-rounded performers the business has ever seen. Strickland began by outlining how he views his place in wrestling today and why he believes his skill set allows him to succeed in almost any role.
“For me at this point, I want to go down as one of the most well-rounded wrestlers of all time. And I really feel like I’m on that path.”
Strickland then explained that his confidence comes from believing he can excel in every type of match or storyline that wrestling offers.
“There’s nothing you can put me in that I can’t do. If you put me in tag matches, I’m going to have one of the best tag matches ever. If you put me in hardcore matches, I’ll probably have one of the best hardcore matches ever. You can have me main event or open the show.”
Strickland also said that adaptability is a major part of what makes him unique, noting that he can thrive whether he’s in a faction, working with a manager, or leading a story on his own. Because of that confidence in his versatility, Strickland made a bold claim about his standing in wrestling history.
“You can put me in a faction, give me a manager—there’s nothing you can do with me that I can’t maximize. That’s why I’ve said there’s nobody else like me in this industry, or probably even in wrestling history, and I stand by that.”
The AEW star also spoke about how much of his character and presentation comes from simply embracing his own personality instead of copying ideas from past wrestlers. Strickland pointed to his pop-culture inspired gear and entrances as examples of how he expresses that creativity every time he appears on screen.
“I made it a point to be as authentically myself as possible. Any weird, childlike idea that came into my head, I put it on screen. I gave it to the people. Whether I’m dressed like Green Lantern, the Predator, Static, or even inspired by a movie like The Warriors like I did at Double or Nothing two years ago, it’s always been authentically me.”
According to Strickland, that authenticity is one of the reasons audiences connect with him whenever he steps into the limelight. Ultimately, Strickland believes that approach could define how he’s remembered when his career eventually comes to an end.
“Every time I come out, people say they’ve never seen that before. I’m giving a piece of myself to the world and to the wrestling world again and again. That’s why I honestly believe I’m one of the most well-rounded wrestlers in the world right now, and hopefully by the end of my career I’ll be remembered as one of the most well-rounded of all time.”
Strickland’s comments show just how strongly he believes in his versatility and creative freedom — two traits that have helped shape his rise in AEW. Whether that confidence translates into a lasting legacy as one of the most complete performers in wrestling history is something that will ultimately be decided over time.
