The July 9 episode of AEW Dynamite saw Swerve Strickland absolutely destroy the Young Bucks’ limo with an excavator. As it turns out, Strickland has now revealed that he didn’t have a license to use the excavator in the first place.

While speaking to Comicbook Nation, Swerve Strickland was asked if destroying the Young Bucks’ limo was as fun as it looked. He said it absolutely was, calling it 100%, even 150% fun. For him, anything that’s clean and luxurious facing total destruction is always awesome, and being the one responsible made it even better.

Strickland revealed how they told him he needed a license to operate the excavator, but he insisted on driving it himself, stating that he’d pay the fine later because it had to be him behind the controls.

“100%. 150%. Anything that clean and like, like um luxurious facing destruction is awesome. And me being like the responsible one for the destruction made it even better. And like I remember they were like, ‘Oh, you might need a license to control this thing.’ I’m like, ‘No, I’m using—I’m driving this thing today.’ Like, ‘No, like I’ll pay the fine later, but I’m—I’m going to drive this. It has to be me.'”

Strickland said he only learned a couple of moves with the machine beforehand and made sure he didn’t fiddle with it too much, feeling that was all he needed to create the moment.

For Swerve, it was an incredible time and truly fun, and he loved making that kind of must-watch TV. As much as he enjoys great in-ring wrestling, he also wants to create memorable moments. Being part of something like smashing the limo right before All In felt like one of those special memories kids would carry into adulthood and eventually show their own children. That’s exactly the kind of legacy he wants.

“Like I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t like fiddling with it too much while doing all this stuff and like oh how do I open the jaw. I learned like a couple moves with it and I was like that’s all I need, I’ll do the rest out there and yeah. So but it was a great time, it was awesome, it was fun.

I just like truly creating like must-watch TV. As much as I love like the like great in-ring grappling and stuff, also like creating moments. And so like I was there when this happened. I remember like right the last Dynamite before going into All In, Swerve smashing the limousine of the Young Bucks with an excavator. I remember where I was when I saw that. You know like these are the next generation of kids that we’re creating uh memories of wrestling on for like an early age.

So like I love creating these big crazy chaotic moments that they’re going to remember and carry on to like their adulthood and then show their kids wrestling too because that’s what we grew up on, seeing like crazy antics and stuff like that when I was like 8 and 10 years old. We still talk about it to this day and revisit that stuff.

So I always wanted to be one—like I want to have moments like that. You know the matches are incredible, I love doing it, but I want to make moments like that that people just are going to always remember.”

Whether or not he had a license, Swerve Strickland created one of the most talked-about moments on AEW television this year. So, Strickland achieved the goal he had in mind and that’s all that mattered to him in the end.
