Stone Cold Steve Austin is still keeping an eye on the wrestling world, and one WWE star in particular remains on his mind.
During a recent interview with SI celebrating the 30-year anniversary of Austin 3:16 Day, the WWE Hall of Famer opened up about checking in on Kevin Owens while the former Universal Champion continues to deal with a serious neck injury.
Austin and Owens share a unique bond in WWE history. Owens faced Austin in the main event of Night 1 of WrestleMania 38 in 2022, marking Austin’s first match since his retirement following WrestleMania 19 in 2003. The match was widely praised and showed that Austin could still deliver in the ring decades after becoming one of the biggest stars in wrestling history.
With Owens reportedly sidelined for close to a year due to neck issues, Austin revealed that he personally reached out to him not long ago. Having suffered a career-altering neck injury himself in the late 1990s, Austin understands the dangers wrestlers face and wanted to offer support as well as a potential medical recommendation.
“I called Kevin a couple of months ago. I think he's got a great doctor, according to him, and I threw out a name that I'd heard good things about. I care about the guy. Love the guy. He's a Hall of Fame talent. I don't know how he banged his neck up, but he took a lot of bumps. He did a lot of stuff.”
Austin went on to reflect on the unpredictable nature of wrestling injuries. Even the most routine moves can lead to serious consequences, something he knows firsthand from his own career.
“It's a rough business, right. No matter what style you work, you're going to take a bump. And even the most simple bump can be the devastating bump. Although it looks normal, that sets off some chain reaction, or is the straw that breaks the camel's back and there's that injury. So, hey, injuries happen. I stay in touch with him a little bit and I wish him nothing but the best.”
Owens has long been considered one of WWE’s most versatile performers, capable of delivering intense matches, memorable promos, and major moments on the biggest stages. Austin clearly believes the former champion still has plenty left to accomplish once he’s healthy enough to return.
For now, Austin continues to stay connected with Owens while focusing on his own ventures outside the ring. Still, hearing that one of WWE’s most iconic stars took the time to personally reach out speaks volumes about the respect between the two competitors.
